The project encompasses two buildings:

The Charles de Foucauld Annexe – 3,120 m²: To meet the needs of its expanding student numbers, the Charles de Foucauld Secondary School (located in the Espace Européen de l’Entreprise) constructed a new building, mainly dedicated to vocational training in maintenance.

The new ECAM building – 3,590 m²: Ecole Catholique des Arts et Métiers

Construction of a fourth engineering school in Schiltigheim for the ECAM Group
The project reflects the complementary nature of the ECAM building and the Charles de Foucauld Annexe:
ECAM will have access to the maintenance workshops and science rooms of the Charles de Foucauld Secondary School.
ECAM’s preparatory classes will be located in the Charles de Foucauld Annexe.
There will be collaboration on the facilities used for technical and scientific instruction

This synergy will make it possible to:

  • Develop a coherent overall layout plan
  • Create links between the two sites
  • Build a common car park and courtyard
These buildings are juxtaposed along an east-west axis on a campus modelled with bioswales that respect the natural cycle of water, creating a variety of landscapes.

Both buildings are designed in a mixed concrete/wood/metal structure. The wooden cross braces, visible behind the glass (structural glazing), ensure stability and characterise all of the facades with a fresh interpretation of traditional Rhineland craftsmanship.

The buildings benefit from the inertia of concrete, thanks to the innovative concept of active slabs; and from the advantages of wood, thanks to wood frame walls, achieving a coefficient R of 10 m² K/W.

This project was carried out with a focus on the complementary nature of the two buildings, through a bioclimatic approach and the use of innovative technologies. The project architect is Pierre Valantin from ARX.
